The Necropolis of Akanthos is one of Halkidiki’s most significant and less “obvious” archaeological sites. It is not a place based on the impressive image of a grand monument or a spectacular temple. Its strength lies elsewhere: in its extent, its long period of use, and the volume of archaeological data it has offered about ancient life in the Ierissos area. For visitors who wish to approach Halkidiki seriously, as a place with depth and historical continuity, the Necropolis of Akanthos is a site of exceptional value. Here, not only is the existence of an important ancient city revealed, but also the way its people bid farewell to their dead, organised their burial ground, and left behind a material imprint spanning centuries.

Available sources indicate that the ancient cemetery of Akanthos was in use from the Archaic period through Roman times, while excavations have brought to light a very large number of graves and portable finds. Visit Halkidiki mentions more than 1,300 recorded graves, while other descriptions of wider Akanthos speak of thousands of burials identified in the area of modern Ierissos. Furthermore, the Ministry of Culture and the site's operating hours listings confirm that the monument is treated as a distinct, visitable archaeological site, under the name “Cemetery of Akanthos”. This information is crucial because it allows us to present it not as a footnote to ancient Akanthos, but as an autonomous point of interest with its own significance.

From a tourism perspective, the Necropolis of Akanthos is best suited for travellers who love archaeology, historical routes, and less prominent sites with substantial content. It is not an “easy” attraction in the sense of immediate photogenic impression, but precisely for this reason, it is invaluable. It offers depth, authenticity, and gravitas to the overall cultural narrative of Eastern Halkidiki. It can be ideally combined with Akanthos, Ierissos, Ancient Stageira, and the other monuments of the Municipality of Aristotle, creating a very strong thematic route for visitors who are not just seeking beautiful spots, but a meaningful connection with history. It is also a site of strong educational interest, as it helps to understand the social and funerary organisation of an ancient city over time.
