Zygou Monastery, also known as Frangokastro, is an important Byzantine monument for visitors interested in the religious and historical identity of Halkidiki. Near Ouranoupoli, immediately outside the boundary of Mount Athos, it is closely connected with the early history of the Athonite monastic community. It offers an introduction to this Byzantine world even for visitors who will not enter Mount Athos.

The remains are of architectural as well as historical interest. Archaeological information describes a Byzantine monastic complex with distinct building phases and a central church of the cross-in-square type. Together, its walls and buildings provide evidence of the organisation, defence and everyday life of a monastery in a strategically important area.

The surviving complex rewards time spent exploring its layout and considering how its different spaces functioned. It is more than a brief roadside stop: the remains and their setting give the place a clear monumental character and a strong relationship with the surrounding Athonite landscape.

The monastery suits travellers interested in Byzantine heritage, religious history and cultural excursions around Ouranoupoli. Families and independent visitors can also include it in an East Halkidiki itinerary. Its atmosphere and landscape provide additional interest for photography, while practical access arrangements should be checked when planning a visit.
